In addition to research, teaching, and mentorship, I am committed to public science communication and outreach.

​I've made a video (right) and online lessons with the folks at TED-ED to help engage the public with science and tardigrades specifically.
People love tardigrades! With this in mind, I founded the International Society of Tardigrade Hunters (ISTH) to:
  • Provide information about the collection and study of tardigrades to the public.
  • Provide resources for the appreciation and advancement of tardigrade biology.
  • Inspire wonder of the natural world in the next generation of scientists.

I volunteer at UNC's DNA Day - teaching kids and adults about tardigrade biology.

Tardigrades have 'super powers' and we are bringing them to the Durham Museum of Life and Science's Heroes and Villians event (Nov. 12th, 2015). Come on out to learn about how these organisms survive almost anything! I hear they will have wearable robotics - which has nothing to do with tardigrades, but is awesome none-the-less.
I volunteer as a judge for the North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair. It's great to see all the creativity and hard work students put into their projects!

Portland Press Herald interview on the importance of finding new tardigrade species.
I served as an advisor for BBC's Cloud Lab - looking for tardigrades in the upper atmosphere and testing the hypothesis that these creatures are dispersed by global wind patterns.
I mentored a team from Univ. Central Florida designing a satellite for a NASA engineering competition. They got 1st place! Great job team!
I volunteer at the Durham Museum of Life and Science's annual 'Cocktails and Cosmonauts' event. I show people live tardigrades and teach them about ongoing efforts in space biology.
